Module 1 - General introduction suitable for all modules

Fire Safety Legislation:
History of Fire Legislation to date detailing some of the UK’s major Fires.
An outline of fire safety legislation leading up to the current Fire Safety Order and Fire Risk Assessment.
Chemistry of Combustion:
The basics of the Chemistry of Fire & combustion
Development & behavior of a range of Fires.
Contributions made by different fuels to fire growth and development.
Recognise and interpret the characteristic development and behavior of a compartment fire.
Fire Evacuation Procedure:
Formulation of a fire evacuation plan.
A need for “fire marshal’s”.
Action to take on discovery of a fire.
Action to take on hearing the fire alarm.
Assembly and roll call.
Liaison with the Fire and Rescue Service.
Re entry of building.
Safe Use of Fire Extinguishers:
Types of extinguishers.
Categories of fire and safe use of portable extinguishers.

General Fire Marshal:
Duties and responsibilities.

Module 2 - Means of Escape:
Defining “means of escape”.
Consideration of building construction, occupancy, travel distances, evacuation times together with sizes and locations of fire exits, and the part they have to play in fire evacuation planning. Building management.Person’s reaction times to fire, and looking at evacuation of persons with disabilities / impairments. Compartmentation of buildings, the benefits of fire doors and automatic fire detection systems.
Fire alarms, Signs, Emergency lighting and Detection systems:British Standards.
Safe use. Difference between smoke and heat detectors.Tests, maintenance and record keeping.

Module 3 -
Fire Risk Assessment:
Identification of Sources of ignition, fuels, combustible materials, persons at risk, removal of potential hazards. Removal and reduction of risks.
A Health and Safety Executives 5 steps to risk assessment.
Undertaking a fire risk assessment in your workplace.
Practical fire risk assessment.
Record keeping, monitoring & reviewing assessments.

Module 4 - Human Behaviour:
Learning about human behaviour in a fire situation.
A look at myths and misconceptions.
A look at “situational awareness” techniques.
Examination of “experience” Vs “training”.
Preparing employees to respond constructively to fire situations.

Module 5 - Fire Marshal and Fire Safety on Construction Sites:
Specific construction site fire hazards.
Duties of fire marshal’s.
Evacuation from buildings under construction & scaffolding.
Housekeeping on site, and traffic routes.
Duty holder’s duties, CDM and fire safety.
Pre construction and construction phase fire safety responsibilities.
Fire marshal’s role.
